How to Fix a Sagging Garage Door| garage garagedoor

The Problem

Your garage door sags in the middle due to the weight. The structural integrity of the sections begins to fail. The garage door "snaps" up as it's closing. The problem is more prevalent on double-wide doors than single-wide doors. See the video for a visualization.

Installation

Step 1 | Remove the surrounding bolts

Remove the top and bottom hinge bolts on the rows that the braces will go. The braces will be positioned on both sides of the broken section.

Step 2 | Mock up the braces

With the bolts removed, placed the support brace where it will go on the door and mock up where the holes were. On the brace, mark where the centers of the bolt holes were. Then, from the center of the brace, measure out about 1/2" to consistently make the holes for the bolts at the same height in the next step.

Step 3 | Drill the holes

Drill the holes in the bracket, big enough for the bolts to fit through without damage, but small enough so that the bolts can grab onto the aluminum. Try to match the bolts' diameter of the inner, solid portion.

FIgure 11. A drill bit that is slightly too big. The threads won't grab. Use a smaller drill bit.

Step 4 | Mount the brace

Using a socket set, mount the brace to the existing bolt holes using either the original bolts or bolts that are slightly longer to account for the brace. Tip: Use hearing protection. This is loud.

Step 5 | Repeat for other brace(s)

Repeat the above steps to mount the other braces. At the end, your brace(s) (at least two) should look like this around the damaged section.

RESULTS

The door should now raise successfully without flexing. Because we chose aluminum, the weight of the braces does not have a significant impact on the weight of the door.
